CES always brings out the heavy hitters in the tech world, and AMD is no slouch in making its mark. This year, they surprised everyone with new CPUs designed for the still-thriving AM4 socket, which has enjoyed an impressive seven years of active support. Donny Woligroski, AMD's Technical Processing Marketing Manager for Desktop and Laptop Consumer Processors, took a moment to chat with PCWorld's Adam Patrick Murray in our latest YouTube video.
Woligroski shed light on the decision to continue supporting the AM4 platform with the introduction of the Ryzen 7 5700X3D and three other chips. He emphasized that the substantial existing user base played a crucial role in this decision. According to Woligroski, the AM5 solution is geared towards those looking to future-proof, but for now, AM4 will continue to receive support. The big question is when this support might end. He hinted that it could be when the production cost (or the difficulty of finding) older DDR4 memory surpasses that of DDR5.
Switching gears to the AM5 socket, Woligroski shared insights into AMD's latest consumer desktop chips. Market forces played a role in delaying the launch of combined APU designs. Additionally, the Ryzen 7000 CPUs, boasting more robust integrated graphics through the RDNA 2 architecture, contributed to the delay. However, the introduction of DDR5 brings a boost to graphics performance, leading to RDNA 3 integration in the new Ryzen 8000 series. The Ryzen 7 8700 G, the most potent among them, features access to a Radeon 780M graphics core.
Addressing the inclusion of AI-boosting NPUs (Neural Processing Unit) in certain AMD laptop and desktop chips, Woligroski discussed the rationale behind investing in what may seem like an emerging use case. He explained, "Like everything else in PC hardware, it's the chicken or the egg — if you don't build the hardware, developers can't develop it."
